This is probably the best days racing in the year for me and obviously the Grand National has given me some of the best days both as a kid watching and as a trainer.
I run three horses on Saturday and I think my horse in the last probably has the best chance on the day. I’ve taken a look at all the races and you read my thoughts below:
Gaskells Handicap Hurdle – Mia’s Storm
I run Knock house in this race and to be fair to him he has been running well back over hurdles. He might just be a little too slow for this but he seems in good knick for this.
Alan King always seem to do well at Aintree and is represented in this by the hat-trick seeking Mia’s Storm. The only worry I have with her is the soft underfoot conditions but if she can handle these I think she’ll go close.
Mersey Novices’ Hurdle – Chosen Mate
I was the under-bidder for Chosen Mate at the sales and he’s made rapid progression since joining Gordan’s. I love the way he won his grade 2 back at Naas in February, he’s only defeat came at the hand of Sinoria and I think he could be the answer here.
Maghull Novices’ Chase – Us And Them
I put him up to win at Cheltenham and he ran a fine race to finish runner-up behind Duc Des Genievres in the Arkle. Josephs horse has been a model of consistency this year and see no reason why he can’t win.
Stayers Hurdle – Sam Spinner
I think the Stayers has a slightly weak look to it with Apple Jade disappointed at Cheltenham. Baring that in mind I will side with Sam Spinner who’s had a reasonably light campaign and showed he retained plenty of ability when finishing runner-up behind Paisley Park in the equivalent at Cheltenham.
Mildmay Handicap Chase – Federici E/W
I wanted to run Federici in the Topham but he didn’t get in so we come here. He has the ability to run well in this but I am not convinced that he wants a big field. We will want him to get away from the start and pick up a nice position early. The three-mile trip and ground should suit, he has got a good racing weight and looks sure to run a big race.
Grand National – Rathvinden
I was torn between Anabelle Fly and Rathvinden in this but I just sided with Willies horse because Anabelle Fly looked to have pretty hard race in the Gold Cup. Rathvinden proved his stamina when winning the Four miler at Cheltenham last season. He was a comfortable winnner at Fairyhouse in February on seasonal debut and I think the combination of his jumping, stamina and class should see him run a big race.
Pinsent Masons Handicap Hurdle – Scheu Time
My runner in this race is Fin And Game he seems to be in good knick and I would like to think he’s nicely handicapped. The grounds a little slower than ideal but we hope he will be competitive. We have booked last seasons champion conditional in Ireland Donal McInerney which I hope will add to his cause.
The main danger to my hopes in this is James Nashs horse Scheu Time. I think he was going to win this race last year only Katie Walsh when he came down at the last. I would imagine this race would have been the plan all season and he might just get compensation here.

Jockey: Will Kennedy
He ran ok at Sandown over trip that’s a bit a shy for him. He was also running well at Haydock when he fell and this looks gthe right type of race for him. With trip, track and ground all fine for him. Hes won at Chepstowe before and has to have a chance.
