Grand National 2019: When is it, how to watch, runners, odds and more

The Grand National starts this week with thousands of spectators flock to Aintree.

The steeplechase will see a maximum of 40 runners travel a distance of 4 mile 514 yards with 28 gruelling and infamous obstacles to crown this years Randox Health Grand National winner. The prize fund is £1million with the winner receiving £561,300 from the prize pot.

Grand National 2019 will take place on the National Course at Aintree, Liverpool

When is it? 

The Grand National will take place on Saturday 6th April at 5:15pm (BST). There are 21 races during the three-day event, starting from Thursday 4th April.

How can I watch the Grand National? 

You can watch the Grand National on ITV1 who won the broadcasting rights for a second year in a row. 

Ed Chamberlain and Francesca Cumani will provide live coverage on ITV for three-day event at Aintree Racecourse. It will also include analysis from AP Mcoy, Mick Fitzgerald and Luke Harvey.

Grand National racecourse overview

Grand National is run over the National Course at Aintree, which covers a distance of 4 miles 514 yards (6.907km). The race consists of two laps of sixteen fences with the second lap missing out on the last two fences as the runners make a dash for the finish line.

Changes:

  • Fences traditional timber frames have been scrapped to reduce injuries and replaced by fronds of ‘plastic birch’.
  • Start – The start has moved 90 yards away from the main stand to reduce crowd noise and speed to first fence.
  • Fences 4,5, 13 have been levelled.
  • Fence 6: Been further levelled to reduce drop.

  • Fence 2 & 18  – 4ft 7in high
  • Fence 3 & 19 – 4ft 10in high with 6ft ditch
  • Fence 4 & 20 – 5ft high

  • Fence 6 & 22: Becher’s Brook – 5ft high with landing side lower than takeoff side
  • Fence 7 & 23: Foinavon – 4ft 6in 
  • Fence 8 & 24: Canal Turn – 5ft high with a sharp 90-degree left turn after landing
  • Fence 9 & 25: Valentine’s Brook – 5ft high  with a 5ft 6in wide brook on landing side

Grand National 2018 was won by jockey Davy Russell riding Tiger Roll who was trained by Gordon Elliott and owned by Ryanair CEO Michael Kevin O’Leary who owns Gigginstown House Stud.

Pleasent Companu, Bless the Wings and Anibale Fly finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively. 

The race favourite Total Recall at 7/1 pulled up on the 29th fence.
