Tiger Roll’s odds slashed for Grand National after Cheltenham victory

Tiger Roll’s odds slashed for Grand National after impressive victory in Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham

  • Tiger Roll was the big favourite ahead of the 4.10pm race followed by Auvergnat
  • Kingswell Theatre put in a brave performance but was eventually pegged back
  • Jockey Keith Donohue primed Tiger Roll for the last and raced through to win

Tiger Roll was promoted to 6-1 favourite for a second successive win in the Grand National after storming to a fourth Festival win in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase on Wednesday.

All season trainer Gordon Elliott and owner Michael O’Leary have played down the chances of the diminutive gelding winning a second National and insisted that the Cross Country Chase was Tiger Roll’s Gold Cup.

O’Leary, the boss of Ryanair, was still doing that on Wednesday, but after the 5-4 favourite simply breezed clear for a 22-length success under jockey Keith Donoghue with runner-up Josies Orders falling further back with every stride, Tiger Roll will have plenty of Aintree supporters.

Tiger Roll has now won two Cross Country Chases, a Triumph Hurdle and a National Hunt Chase.

Elliott said: ‘It’s a big ask for this horse to do win the Grand National again, but what he has done there today has been brilliant and we’ll enjoy it. To win at four Cheltenham Festivals is class.’

O’Leary added: ‘He is an amazing little horse who comes here every year and is phenomenal.’

Elliott, who had endured a frustrating Festival until Tiger Roll, doubled up when 2-1 favourite Envoi Allen landed the Weatherbys Festival Bumper under Jamie Codd.
